Streetscape Designs Vetted in Public Meeting

At a well attended meeting July 13, streetscape designs were presented and vetted with the public. The meeting was the culmination of nine months of effort by a committed team of design professionals and community members united in the effort in effecting a vision for the future of the Boulevard. Early in the project, the team determined West 25th Avenue east from Federal should be included in a design district due to it’s density of historic commercial storefront structures. Over the course of countless committee meetings, two public meetings including a half day design workshop, 10 design concepts were defined.

Along with presenting and discussing the design concepts, the meeting also shared results of the “name the district” survey and sought input from those in attendance about the designs. The presentation provided at the meeting can be read and downloaded in three sections, Part One, Part Two and Part Three.

Several public comments to the presented designs include:

  • Establishing a “gateway” to West 25th from Federal was warmly embraced.
  • Slowing traffic, introducing traffic calming elements and improving pedestrian safety and experience was strongly supported. (more…)

Help Name the Streetscape Design District

You can assist the Federal Streetscape project by helping to name the streetscape design district! The past two months the Federal Streetscape Design Committee has met to formalize streetscape concepts and designs, which will be presented to the public Wednesday, July 13th, 6:30 PM (6:00 PM Open House) at the Adam Mystery Playhouse. The twelve design concepts were derived from a public input meeting and design workshop held earlier in the year.

One important priority identified during the design workshop is to better “brand” the area for identification, streetscape design and marketing purposes. Taking that need to heart, the Design Committee decided to “put it to the public”, by sponsoring a survey to gauge preferred names for the streetscape area. Public Meeting to Present 12 Streetscape Concepts

The Federal Boulevard Partnership Streetscape Design Committee is prepared to present drawings and illustrations of  twelve streetscape concepts, which were developed from the public Design Workshop convened in the spring (see recap article below). The concepts will be formally presented and feedback solicited at a public meeting Wednesday, July 13, 6:30 PM (6:00 PM Open House), Adams Mystery Playhouse, 24th and Federal.

Twelve concepts (random order) are:

  1. Redesign of Federal intersections providing greater pedestrian and bicycling safety at West 23rd and 26th Avenues
  2. Improvement of center median pedestrian crossings at West 24th and 25th Avenues
  3. Change/adapt slopes along east and west side of Federal in the 2300 and 2400 blocks to increase pedestrian safety and improve landscaping by broadening and better utilizing slopes through use of retaining walls, upper and lower landscaping, two rows of trees, and other appropriate treatment.
  4. Improve building scale and grow potential uses
  5. Design a vendor niche along certain steep slopes along Federal
  6. Suggest a bus stop design standard
  7. Redesign of W. 25th and Eliot intersection
  8. Design a Gateway at Federal and 25th including illustration of higher and better uses along the west side of the 2500 block of Federal
  9. Develop streetscape design concepts for West 25th Avenue to include angled parking
  10. Develop an upgraded median design for the district to include greater landscape diversity, hardscape and lighting
  11. Develop a brand with identity for the district
  12. Develop opportunities for public art

A group pauses to consider the 23rd and Federal intersection

A beautiful Saturday morning dawned in early April and with it came many business representatives and local residents to the Adams Mystery Playhouse to vision and design the future of Federal Boulevard and W. 25th Avenue. Organizing into two groups, each group toured two block areas and sat down to discuss aspirations and attitudes around building scale, possible uses and streetscape designs.

A comprehensive list of ideas and concepts developed during the workshop will be illustrated and released for comment May 25 at a public meeting 6:30 PM at the Adams Mystery Playhouse. A sampling of design concepts include:

  • Use of streetscape design and furniture to unify commercial and residential interests along W. 25th and Federal between 23rd and 26th Avenues.
  • Delineate pedestrian walk areas at intersections including walkways through the center median by the usage of different paving textures, materials and architectural structures. (more…)
